The day is going pretty much as planned. I’m just sitting down to lunch while the caulk dries. So far today I’ve gotten the paint in the bathroom touched up, the real switches installed and the caulking done.
Once the caulk is dry I will seal the tile and then it’s off limits in the bathroom until the sealer is dry.
GFI outlet installed with new light switches and a motion detector for the fan.
What a great pigroast we had this year! More family came than I had expected and it was a great surprise. The turnout was great and the pig tasted awesome.
The day after was calm but fun, I took a group of the kids up to the “tree” house to clean it up a bit and we had an “adventure” hiking around the woods exploring.
On the way home today we even stopped to see our nieces and Ryan got to hold our new niece for the first time! The girls were adorable and I got a good 10 minutes of imaginary play in after holding the baby for a bit. It was a quick visit, just a stop on our way home but we would have hated to miss the opportunity to see them since we were driving by.

Tomorrow I have lots of plans for the house, Ryan will be in the office but I think I can manage. Most important is to finish up the tile in the bathroom. This includes some caulking, then some touch up painting (where I scuffed the walls), then finally sealing the grout and tile (shower, one wall and the floor).
After that I would also like to get the bathroom door stripped down so it’s ready to be refinished. If I don’t get to that it will be because I’m outside working on building a compost bin 🙂 I’m looking forward to the day!
And just in time, I’ve been feeling homesick just a bit, probably because I haven’t seen my siblings since easter and we’ve all just been busy. Time to pack up and head home for the weekend!
You wouldn’t think it would take that long – especially if the electrical wiring is already done and you’re just connecting the new lights themselves. Here are some problems you MIGHT just hit:
– problem: The screws to connect the screw plate to the box are too large
— solution: home depot #6 screws, cost: 98 cents and a full day (for the trip to home depot)
– problem: The screw plate is made to fit on a circular box not square
— solution: use different holes for the screws – which involves sliding screws and trying to keep them tight the whole time – this is a real pain, cost – 10 min
– problem: The screws that stick out the front of the plate to attach the sconces to are too long
— solution: cut with dremel, then re-cut with dremel, then re-cut until screws work again, cost – 30 min and some scuffs on the wall. By the way I hate saws – and that now extends to dremels cutting things. Sparks – no fun – and if it can cut metal it could easily cut me. Not something I will volunteer to do in the future.
The result:
cost: priceless - to me anyway 🙂
In total it took over an hour – which is really ridiculous but the lights came out great and they’re supposed to hang upside down but I really wanted sconces that faced up so I gave them a shot and I think they look fine facing up. The lights we chose add a little color to the bathroom and there’s some green in them so I think I’m going to use the green for the shower curtain and towels to tie everything together.
Now I just have a few scuff marks on the wall to touch up .. hehe… but that can wait until Monday. For now I’m enjoying my one victory. And I can finally measure the space we have for a mirror so we can get one!
Last night after work I painted the final coat on the trim (hopefully final coat). I gave it a light sanding before painting so it’s nice and smooth this morning. Trim painted!
I also installed the overhead light fixture since the ceiling is now finished. I still have to install the sconce lights and the real switches but one thing at a time 🙂 Bathroom light installed.
Tonight I’d like to seal the grout on the right hand side wall. I also want to get the dehumidifier set up to drain to the basement sink so we don’t have to empty out the bucket twice a day!
Last night after work I taped off the trim and got the first coat of paint done. The Linen White is a warm white. I was a little worried in the bathroom that it’s too close to the wall color but I think it will be fine. In the other rooms where the walls are brighter this color will be perfect! Hopefully tonight I can do a second coat and then I can decide if it needs a third coat or not (seems like it will at this point but I’ll wait and see how two coats look first).
I went out to water the garden before work this morning and noticed that one of the rose bushes is in bloom! Nice and early! What a great way to start the day – just had to share:
Roses blooming in May!
Tonight I hope to be home at a regular time and get the trim in the bathroom painted so we’ll finally see what color we picked out for all the trim (Linen White).
I was going to keep things simple this year in the garden area because I just didn’t have time but I’ve been wanting to do a vegetable garden for years. So when I first started out yesterday working on the gardens it was with the intention of moving a few flowers around (hopefully they’ll survive their transplanting). One rosebush died so I also wanted to replace that.
So I spent hours diggin up grass to extend the garden bed then I ran to home depot. Later I continued extending the bed because I had bought a few more plants and had a few I had purchased at BJ’s previously that I decided to plant – although they don’t look so good so we’ll see if they are alive or not.
And for the pictures…
Begonia's around the front tree - exactly what I've been wanting to do!A closer pictureExtended the rose bush bed and moved the plants aroundVegetable garden!
Just went with a few herbs (oregan, basil and rosemary) and some veggies (2 tomatoes and an orange pepper) then some flowers and marigolds (keeps the bugs away from the tomatoes hopefully).
Red Azalea bush! I love these and hope to have them in the front some day when the porch is done. Some blooms - these are the perennials from my mom last year. Mountain Bluet and Chives both blooming!I moved thse bushy plants from in front of the rose bushes over to the rasberry bushes where they won't be hidden. The lillies are really coming back but need to be moved forward from the raspberry bushes.
We’ve decided to switch to a black mulch this year (and from now on) so I ended the evening last night mulching. I still have 2 bags and have to really weed the perennial garden before I mulch it. I also want to plant mint and lavender along the driveway but that may be a project for next year, we’ll see!
Well that was a long day! I’m just wrapping up and I need a third shower for the day and then right to bed!
First though an update – I did make it outside after lunch and spent 2 hours in the gardens. Then a quick trip to home depot for some plants and mulch (I got inspired while I was out there). When I got back I primed the trim in the bathroom so it would have time to dry so I could paint the walls later.
Bathroom trim primed!
Ryan got home from work just as I finished up the trim so I made up some dinner before heading back out to finish up my new gardens. As it got dark (9pm) I headed back inside and put the second coat of paint on the bathroom walls and ceiling…
Walls/ceiling painting done!
I couldn’t take any garden photos since it was dark but I will update tomorrow with the garden pictures – I did way more than I planned for this year but I’m psyched now! I even put in a small veggie garden!
I got the first coat of paint on the ceiling/walls in the bathroom before lunch. We originally picked 2 different colors for the ceiling and walls however once I put them up together I realized they were too close in color to each other so I decided to take the slightly lighter ceiling paint and use it for the walls as well. We can always change it up later but I think it will open up the small room nicely.
After lunch I might head outside to do some garden work while the paint is trying. I’d like to get the primer on the trim and maybe the second coat on the ceiling/walls later.
