Closet Doors

This week has been a bit exhausting – at 31 weeks pregnant, once I’ve worked a full day and picked up the little one from daycare, then fed her (and us usually), I really just want to rest.  HOWEVER there are things to do!  This week I got the 3 closet doors that we brought home MONTHS ago finally painted.  We can get them installed this weekend, the painter is taking care of the rest of the doors which should be done when we get out there.  I’m excited to see the painting progress this weekend!

Next week is the last week like this, I’m going to be painting the drawers and doors for the diningroom built-ins once they are stripped, I got one drawer stripped last night and I can finish the rest maybe monday night then paint Tue, Wed, Thur nights (primer and 2 coats of paint).  Lot of work but going to look great!

Ryan and I are going out without Alex this weekend so I can finish up any projects from my list.  This will be my last trip out, I will be 32 weeks along next week and want to start taking it easy as I’m hoping to make it to 38 weeks this time (Alex came at 37).  Ryan will have one more tough weekend of doing floors the following weekend without me and then he too will be taking a break as he has other commitments for a while.

Kid-Free weekend again

We are on an every-other weekend schedule going out to work on the house and this weekend Alex stayed with her grandparents so we could go out by ourselves and make more progress!  It was a productive day and a half for sure.

Saturday Ryan worked on trim all day – starting with the master bedroom, putting up window trim.  We need to buy more window apron trim but he got what we had up and the windows look great!

3 windows even have aprons!
3 without aprons (plus we need aprons for the back bedroom and master bath)

Next up he worked on baseboards.  He couldn’t finish the uptairs hallway shadow boxes and chair rail because the door for the master bedroom needs to be installed, and before that it needs to be stripped, so we packed it up and brought it back and Ryan will strip it here and we’ll bring it back ready to install.

Had to cut the old baseboard down to match and then put in a new piece.

Notice the blue rug at the top of the stairs is gone!  Floor looks great underneath.  We didn’t take it off all the stairs just this section so far.

Baseboards continue around the linen closet and down the hallway on one side.
And partially around the washer/dryer stand
This is the door to the attic trimmed out (no pic before) and technically there’s baseboard on the right side of it too…

I focused on ceilings and electrical this weekend.  First I hooked up smoke detectors so we now have all the smoke detectors hooked up and connected!  I also put a light in at the top of the back stairs and a bunch of the covers for the HVAC in the ceilings (and recessed lights have covers now)..

Light at the top of the stairs in the back and smoke detector all hooked up 🙂
Covers on HVAC and another smoke detector (had to do upstairs and downstairs but didn’t bother taking pics of all of them!)
Washer and dryer outlets and put the trim piece on the drain/water thing.

The washer/dryer stand is just about ready – we have to put a piece of trim around it and water proof it, then we’ll bring up the washer/dryer and then we can put the last door in place at the top of the back stairs.

On Sunday we worked a few hours on the master bathroom.  We had our neighbor clean up the ceiling in the bathroom and start sheetrocking a bit (just one section) on Saturday.  Ryan put in the ceiling fan/light box Sunday morning and then we ran all the rough electrical in there (outlets and lights).

Sheetrock on one small wall 🙂
Fan installed, just need to hook up that wire.
Wiring for lights and outlets by vanity

We drew out the plans for the vanity and the shower so we’re ready to finish the rough-in plumbing hopefully this week.  We’re going to order what we need for the bathroom this week too (need the vanity placement so we can plan the light boxes exactly).

So the master bathroom has been started, trim work continues nicely and electrical is going along.  I replaced a bunch of the switches with the nice rockers we are using and started putting in outlets in the upstairs hallway.

The next trip out we’ll have Alex so probably getting more trim done and I’ll get a bit more electrical done during naps and such.

OH – and we got the built-in doors hung – they need a tiny bit of sanding down to close nicer and then touch up painting in place, then we’ll put knobs and magnet pieces on and they’ll be done…

They look nice with doors on!

Deck Stained

(Edited to add pictures!!!)

With the rain every weekend really messing with plans and cold weather coming soon I decided a week ago to just do the deck anyway, it’s a covered porch so the majority of it would be just fine and hopefully the rain would hold off anyhow (spoiler : it didn’t).

Well I spent all day Saturday sanding the deck while Chloe watched Alex and Ryan painted the red molding on the porch soffit (and the tops of the posts).  That came out awesome!  Finally about 6pm I had finished sanding and cleaning up and started staining.  By 7 I had to quick for a few min to give Alex a bath and then finished up while Chloe read books to Alex.  I was done in time to do the rest of bedtime!

Old to new – hopefully the new darkens over the winter!
From the other side
The red molding under the soffit was painted all around
Up to this point (it got dark) – and notice the vertical frieze boards installed on this side of the skirting – there is only one more piece by the stairs to add and that will be done!

There wasn’t any packing to do because our truck was filled with our new bed (king size bed!) so we just relaxed after bedtime.  Of course at 6am I woke up to pouring rain!  Our windows were all out upstairs too (getting painted by our neighbor) but luckily the rain was really coming straight down so everything was fine (except the ends of the deck that got soaked!).

No idea how it really faired, it stopped raining for our drive Sunday and I’m heading up there tonight and I’ll get to see how it looks after a week of drying.

This past weekend we stayed in NY and I got the built-in doors primed finally.  They still need paint but the primer I could spray on since it was sanded after anyhow.  I really need to set up a better spot to paint – the primer had tons of bugs stuck in it 🙂

TV Room progress

More progress on the built-ins this weekend!  We got the shelves painted (last coat) so we can install them tomorrow.  We put in the 5 drawers that were finished (yea – storage!!!).  Ryan hooked up the final speaker wires and we ran a new wire for the subwoofer that is hiding behind the couch.  All of the electronics are hooked up and wires are run appropriately.  Ryan also drilled a hole in the console of our couch and we installed a surge protector in the console so we have easy access to outlets for our laptops and phones!

Outlets in our couch!
Speaker wires
Speakers are wired in the top and bottom of the bookshelves.
The cabinet with doors has 3 finished drawers installed and the 2 drawer cabinet is baby stuff!
Almost done!

We still have 5 drawers to finish (the shellac goes fast, but they need a first pass of good sanding first).  Then Ryan has to make/install doors on the built-ins – he has 1 set of doors almost done and ready for paint but that leaves 3 more sets.  We still have to finish the doors to the room and the closet itself.  I can’t wait to move our dvds into the built-ins and put some things up on the bookshelves and walls!

This week the weather is supposed to be great, which is good because this is Ryan’s one week to get the last window installed and all the siding up!  By himself.  Hopefully this works out!

TVroom painting

It is getting very close now!  This last weekend we made some more progress on the tvroom.  I got 5 of the 10 drawers sanded, and 2 coats of shellac put on them.  Ryan installed the hardware so they’re ready to get installed and we only have 5 more to go 🙂

I also got a first coat of paint on the shelves, hopefully finishing up those this week so we can put them in!  And finally I cut in on the last 2 walls and ceiling in the tvroom and ryan got the rolling done so the walls are completed and the room is looking more finished for sure!

We still have to finish those 5 drawers, the shelves and make the doors for the built-ins but it’s very close now and much more usable.  Once the shelves are in Ryan can finish installing the speakers (2 more to go) and our 7.1 surround sound will be done as well.

painting and visiting

This weekend was a busy one!  Between visitors and painting we got a lot accomplished.  By the end of Saturday we had the first coat of paint on all of the trim in the tv room, just in time for friends to come over for dinner.  Then after Alex went to bed we got the second coat on the windows!

Sunday we sanded all the trim again and got the second coat of paint.  Plus ryan started installing the shoe molding that got a second coat in the morning.  This was all pretty much after a visit and lunch with Mimi (Alex’s grandmother drove out for a visit).

Built-ins all painted!
Trim all painted!

What’s left in the tvroom?

  • A coat of paint on the outside of the window sashes and putting them back in
  • A coat of paint on the walls once the trim is all dry (and it has to be cut in around all the trim)
  • Cut in the ceiling paint along 2 walls of  crown
  • Shoe molding needs to be installed (just behind the couch is getting done, the rest of the baseboards just got painted).
  • Shelves and drawers for the built-ins need to be finished (painted/shellac’d)
  • Doors for built-ins need to be re-made and finished
  • Doors to the room all need to be painted

I think that’s it, basically the room can start to be used now, we can start putting in the stereo for example and run the wires for the tv.  We can put the rug down as soon as the wall and ceiling paint are done … fun stuff!

Tomorrow Alex and I are off to visit the cousins since when they stopped by Saturday she was napping they didn’t get to play with her.  Then Tuesday it’s back to work!

It’s friday night

And what a night out has been.  alex was in a good mood after a good day and she was right on schedule. Ryan gave her a bath while I made dinner, we all ate together then she went to bed.  Once she was down we got more painting done in the tvroom.  The windows, shoe molding and crown all have one coat of paint now as well as 3 out of 4 door trims.  That leaves one door trim and baseboards before we sand and re coat.

Oh and the new couch arrived!

And alex seems to have started teething (drooling and chewing on everything).

Looking forward to the rest of the weekend!

Painting

After Alex went to bed tonight I got some painting done in the tvroom.  I cut in the ceiling on the 2 sides where the crown is painted (above the couch area), then rolled about 3/4 of the ceiling (same area) before running out of paint.

Once that was done I decided to cut in on the 2 walls that will be behind the couch. I got along the crown done and around the windows. Alex woke up as I was starting along the baseboards so that will wait.

If she sleeps well again tomorrow night maybe I ccan finish those two walls. The couch comes Friday!  1/2 a room to finish is much less daunting, even if that 1/2 has more painting due to built-ins.

Off to bed.

Last week off

Well my last week off of work and Alex got a cold – then passed that cold on to Ryan and I for the weekend.  Lovely.  So we’ve all had very little sleep (Alex is up every 2 hours at night when she’s sick evidently and prefers to be held).    Luckily she’s mostly been in a good mood while sick, it’s just the lack of sleep that’s making me grumpy 🙂

Anyhow, even sick we couldn’t take the weekend off – the tvroom is on track to get done soon and with the couch coming Friday we made it a priority to get the trim done on the walls the couch will block.

So Friday night we sanded the 2 walls the couch will block and I got the first coat of trim paint on them.  Saturday we got the rest of the trim sanded and sanded the paint on those 2 walls.  I got the second coat of paint on the trim the couch will block Saturday night.  So the rest of the trim needs to be painted still but the couch can go in once those 2 walls get a coat of paint (and the ceiling).

Sunday we wired the new furnace and water heater in the basement that will get hooked up Monday.  The gas line is officially in (Friday) so we will be running off gas this week hopefully!

Uh oh – Alex is up (and sniffly) – time to go!

poor sick baby!
